In the biggest study of its kind - scientists are to examine the near-death experiences of 1,500 hospital patients to see if out-of-body experiences are real. Dr Sam Parnia, who is leading the study at University of Southampton, said: 'If you can demonstrate that consciousness continues after the brain switches off, it allows for the possibility that the consciousness is a separate entity.
